Project Overview
This project involved the demolition and upsizing of natural gas piping to unit heaters serving the service shop and sewage processing building. The scope focused on removing outdated, undersized gas lines and replacing them with properly sized piping to meet increased heating demand, ensuring safe and reliable operation for both facilities.
Scope of Work
- Site Assessment and Planning:
- Evaluated existing natural gas piping infrastructure serving the service shop and sewage processing building to determine capacity requirements for the upgraded unit heaters.
- Developed a piping plan to support increased gas flow while maintaining compliance with local and municipal codes.
- Demolition:
- Removed existing undersized natural gas lines feeding the unit heaters in both the service shop and sewage processing building.
- Safely capped and decommissioned abandoned piping sections in accordance with code requirements.
- Gas Line Upsizing and Installation:
- Installed new, properly sized natural gas piping to accommodate the heating load of the unit heaters in both buildings.
- Ran new gas lines through the service shop and sewage processing building, coordinating routing to minimize disruption to ongoing facility operations.
- Connected upsized piping to existing unit heater equipment, ensuring proper pressure and flow.
- Testing and Code Compliance:
- Pressure-tested all new gas piping to confirm system integrity prior to final connection.
- Verified installation met all applicable municipal and safety code requirements.
Challenges and Solutions
- Challenge: Working out of town in a remote location, which limited access to local resources and required additional logistical planning.
Solution: Proactively coordinated material procurement and crew scheduling in advance to minimize delays caused by the remote location. - Challenge: Meeting the general contractor's project deadlines despite the added complexity of remote-site logistics.
Solution: Diligently planned each phase of the work and maintained close communication with the general contractor to stay aligned with the project timeline.
Results
The project was completed on time and on schedule. The upsized natural gas piping now reliably supports the unit heaters in both the service shop and sewage processing building, providing improved heating capacity and long-term dependability for the facility's operations.
